Geophagia

I.
A tureen of mud,
Slurried and thin,
To whet the appetite
And cleanse the tongue.

II.
Sands of Arabia,
Hot with the cinnamon seed
Of djinn and ghosts;
Stirred with a simoon wind
And baked by Mohammed's angry sun.

III.
Cakes of Alabama clay,
Vermilion and damp.
Confederate gravedust
Washed down with
The humid sweat of
Birmingham iron.

IV.
The grit of Golgotha,
Tasting of echoes:
Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani.

V.
Everest.
Everest.

None of these can rid me of the taste of you.
